His first appearance revealed the existence of an Order of Sith Lords that was believed to be extinct when he confronted Jedi Master Qui-Gon Jinn in a brief duel on Tatooine. Following Queen Padmé Amidala to Naboo, Maul encounters Qui-Gon Jinn and Obi-Wan Kenobi again, leading to an intense battle. Although Maul succeeded in killing Qui-Gon, Obi-Wan managed to cut him in half with a lightsaber, causing him to fall into a reactor pit. Believed dead by many, Maul used the Force to reach an air vent and ended up in a trash container that transported him to Lotho Minor, a junk world in the Outer Rim. There, he used his dark side powers to construct six robotic legs and survived in hiding, consumed by rage and shame. His brother, Savage Opress, rescued him and took him back to Dathomir, where he received new mechanical legs and had his mind restored. After numerous conflicts and battles during the rise of the Empire, Maul ultimately faced Obi-Wan in a final, definitive confrontation.
